Bulldog Drummond’s Revenge (1937)

On December 16, 1937, Paramount Pictures released the second “Bulldog” Drummond film starring John Howard as Drummond. Ronald Coleman and Ralph Richardson played Captain Hugh “Bulldog” Drummond in the past. By the time Bulldog Drummond’s Revenge (affiliate link) was released, the series had become a formula “B” movie franchise.

John Howard as Bulldog Drummond

Despite Captain Drummond being married to Phyllis Clavering in The Return of Bulldog Drummond (1934), one of the plot devices in the Paramount “B” series was “Bulldog” Drummond’s constant attempts to marry his long time girlfriend Phyllis Clavering.

In Bulldog Drummond’s Revenge (1937), Captain Hugh “Bulldog” Drummond is determined to travel to Switzerland with his servant and confident Tenny and best friend Algy Longworth. E. E. Clive played Tenny and Reginald Denny portrayed Algy throughout the series.

Louise Campbell plays Phyllis Clavering in the second of three films. Heather Angel played Phyllis most frequently in the Paramount series. I prefer Angel over Campbell in the role.

Drummond and his friends stumble upon a highly explosive formula. Criminals attempting to steal the formula killed the inventor of the explosive and parachuted a suitcase of the explosive. Drummond attempts to keep the explosives from the organized crime ring attempting to obtain the deadly explosive.

Much of the action plays out on the train bound for Switzerland. Despite Captain Drummond’s promise to Phyllis to leave the matter in his friend Colonel Nielson’s hands, the thieves pull Drummond into the fray. Drummond cannot turn his back on his duty to his country even for the woman he loves.

The film only runs 55 minutes. You can leave a comment or ask a question about this or any post on my Facebook page and Twitter profile. Enjoy the film.
