During June 1884, J.H. McLaughlin wrestled Duncan C. Ross in a three-out-of-five-falls mixed styles match. McLaughlin and Ross agreed to wrestle two falls according to collar-and-elbow rules, McLaughlin’s specialty. They agreed to wrestle two falls according to side hold rules, Ross’ specialty. If the match was tied, they would wrestle the last fall according to catch wrestling.
