Happy Birthday, Caleb!

This week my youngest son Caleb turns 16. I can’t believe it has been 16 years since I saw and held him for the first time. Caleb was the baby and waited until he had a good meal at Red Lobster before making his appearance in the world. When he was ready though, he didn’t wait around. He was born 40 minutes after we arrived at the hospital around 7 a.m.

Caleb was the quietest of the three kids. When the other kids would start arguing about something, he would go often on his own to play. Even then he wasn’t in to conflict. He usually stayed out of trouble because he did not like Tam or I correcting him.

Although not as dramatic as his big sister, Caleb likes performing. Growing up, he always played stand up comedian at family functions. If he wasn’t homeschooled, he probably would have been the class clown.

Two Christmas Eves ago, he performed the “Christmas Can-Can” for his mother. All the grandkids have to sing a song or perform a skit at my mom’s house before they get their gifts. After he finished, Caleb’s aunt told everyone else, “Caleb just shamed all of you.”

Caleb and Me Teaching Kid’s Class

Caleb always liked Judo. Caleb also works great with kids. We put Caleb in charge of our academy’s kids program, where he has done an excellent job. He also volunteers for our church’s children ministry.

I’ve got to spend more time with Caleb lately because I’m teaching his Wednesday night Royal Rangers class as well as being home on Friday’s, when Tam and Kenneth are at Bible Study. Caleb has developed into a solid young man with a good head on his shoulders.

Caleb will graduate a year early from high school next year. Right now, he plans to get a bachelor degree in Religion or Divinity. If Caleb decides to be a pastor, he will be a good shepherd. Caleb loves Jesus and would excel at teaching his Word. I think pastor is one of the hardest jobs in the world but he is grounded enough to handle it.

I have butted heads with Caleb sometimes because he is so laid back. As a father, I want to see him reach his full potential and have the foundation for a strong future. Caleb may be smarter than the old man though because he has developed into a fine young man.

Caleb will have a beautiful family one day and they will love him for his kindness and peaceful spirit. Happy birthday, jeho. I love you.
