Twenty-one years ago today, Tam walked down the aisle with her dad and Caity. My knees buckled when I saw how beautiful she was in her wedding dress. I couldn’t believe this woman wanted to marry me. Doing my best not to start crying during the ceremony, I managed to get through my vows and the minister announced us as man and wife.
When I look back on July 27, 1996, Tam and I exchanged vows in front of our family and friends. We pledged to be husband and wife for better or worse, through sickness and health and all the challenges which arise during a marriage. I’m happy to say after 21 years, Tam hasn’t decided to upgrade.
When Tam and I walked down the aisle as husband and wife, I don’t think we knew what we were facing. During our 21 years of marriage, Tam and I raised three kids. We buried three grandparents and three parents. We’ve been to many graduations, weddings and communions. We’ve seen loved ones sentenced to prison. We have watched all of our kids happy and feeling great satisfaction but also feeling betrayed, disappointed and heart broken. To quote Dickens, “It was the best of times. It was the worst of times.”
However, through all those times, Tam and I went through them together. Now that our youngest son is an adult, we are entering a new season of life. I’m as excited for this season of marriage as I was when we were newlyweds.
I’ve been fortunate to experience all these seasons with the most beautiful and intelligent woman I’ve ever known. I can’t wait for the next 21 years. What did marrying Tam change? Everything.Pin It
