Dufur wrestled a series of matches with Duncan C. Ross in Louisville, Kentucky in April and May of 1882. On Saturday, April 22, 1882, Dufur wrestled Ross at the Masonic Temple in Louisville, Kentucky. Major Edward Hughes, the Chief of the Louisville Fire Department, served as referee.
Dufur won the coin toss and shocked everyone by choosing to wrestle the first fall of the best three-out-of-five-falls mixed styles match according to catch-as-catch-can wrestling rules. Ross specialized in catch wrestling. Dufur planned to wrestle defensively and wear Ross out for the other falls. The result of the first fall led observers to conclude that Dufur’s gambit failed to pay off. Ross took the first fall in five minutes.

After a ten-minute rest, Dufur and Ross returned to the mat for the second fall contested under collar-and-elbow wrestling rules. Both men wore loose fitting jackets. Dufur secured a hip lock and tossed Ross flat on his back to take the second fall after two minutes, thirty seconds.
Dufur and Ross removed the jackets to start the third fall according to catch wrestling rules. Ross pinned Dufur in three minutes.
Dufur asked for a twenty-minute rest, which Dufur said was allowed according to the Edward James rules of collar-and-elbow wrestling. However, Chief Hughes said that the men agreed to ten-minute rest, so both men had ten minutes to rest before the next fall.
Dufur threw Ross with a hip lock in only thirty seconds to take the fourth fall.
The men wrestled the fifth fall according to side hold rules. After Chief Hughes secured the harness on both men, Dufur threw Ross over his hip and thought he defeated Ross right at the start, but Hughes said, “No fall.” Dufur secured another hip lock and threw Ross flat to his back. Dufur took the fifth fall and match in two minutes, fifteen seconds.
