Charlie Chan at Treasure Island (1939)

Charlie Chan at Treasure Island (1939) (affiliate link) er den tredje Twentieth-Century Fox film med Sidney Toler som Charlie Chan. Inspector Chan and Jimmy Chan, spilt av Victor Sen Yung, are flying to the San Francisco World Exposition in 1939 as the film opens.

Den humpete tur gjør Jimmy veldig nervøs. Also on the flight is Charlie’s friend Paul Essex, spilt av Louis Jean Heydt. Han er ferdig en roman for sin forlegger, when he dies. Essex was being blackmailed by the mysterious Zodiac, en antatt mystiker og synsk, and chose to take his life rather than have a secret exposed.

Charlie begins to investigate Zodiac, who he suspects of blackmailing other. Charlies is particularly anxious to solve the crime after he promises Essex’s widow that he will catch the Zodiac.

Charlie blir hjulpet i sin etterforskning av Jimmy, investigative reporter Pete Lewis, spilt av Douglas Fowley, og magikeren Rhadini, played by Cesar Romero. Rhadini, a magician who is focused on exposing fakes in his business, has been trying to expose Zodiac for several months.

Douglas Dumbrille spiller en forsikring etterforsker, som kan eller ikke kan være mer enn han ser ut. He becomes a possible suspect, when he steals Essex’s manuscript during the confusion on the plan after Essex is found dead.

Filmen går 75 minutter. The Twentieth-Century Fox films were usually well made because the franchise kept Twentieth-Century Fox solvent for a number of years.

Cesar Romero, som spiller Rhadini, ble født februar 15, 1907 i New York City til en italiensk far og cubanske mor. Han tilbrakte mesteparten av sin karriere som spiller latinske elskere, playboys og skurker. Han huskes best i dag for å spille Joker i 1960 “Batman” TV-show starring Adam West som Batman.

Ifølge Wikipedia, Romero foreldre fikk alvorlige økonomiske tilbakeslag på grunn av Wall Street Crash av 1929. Romero støttet hans store utvidede familie med hans film inntjening. He was often seen with beautiful women but remained a bachelor. Romero never had any children.
