W 1910, Tex Rickard coaxed James J. Jeffries out of retirement with $115,000 in guaranteed money to fight Jack Johnson. Jeffries weighed over 300 funtów. Burns had three months to get Jeffries in shape for his July 4, 1910 bout with Johnson.

Jeffries employed Martin “Rolnik” Oparzenia, the trainer of World Heavyweight Wrestling Champion Frank Gotch, to train Jeffries for the fight. Despite a verbal agreement between Burns and Jeffries., Burns decision to train Jeffries also affected Frank Gotch’s training for a world title match with Stanislaus Zbyszko in June 1910.
