Jack Shea Finally Does Time
Ar Lúnasa 11, 1896, a train arrived in St. Louis, Missouri around 7:30 a.m. Three figures exited the train. Two healthy looking police officers were escorting John D. “Jack” Shea, who killed St. Louis Police Officer Patrick Doran on November 7, 1881.
The gaunt and sickly Shea was no longer the young thug, a fhorghníomhú Doran linn chase tar éis a dara éalú as an Naomh. Louis Jail. Bhí Shea ach 38 bliain d'aois ach 15 years on the run and a couple of stints in prison clearly left their mark on him.
When the officers escorted the pale Shea in to see St. Louis Póilíní Príomh Harrigan, Shea inis Harrigan, “Well, Chief, Tá mé ag imirt cluiche a chailliúint. Anois tá mé ag sáithithe do 50 bliana.” Shea éalaigh an St. Louis Jail ceithre huaire. Bhí sé le linn a dara éalú gur mharaigh sé Oifigeach Doran.
In October 1881, Shea agus a Comhdhála gar Frank Fone bhris amach as an Naomh. Louis Jail don chéad uair. Cion sraith thefts agus buirgléireacht, St. Louis Police captured them in early November 1881.
Ar Samhain 7, 1881, éalaigh siad arís agus lámhaigh Oifigeach Patrick Doran linn tóir trí Downtown St. Louis. St. Louis Police captured Shea and returned him to jail.
Laistigh de mhí, Shea agus Fone éalaigh arís Naomh. Louis Jail. Cé go raibh Shea contúirteacha, Fone was crafty and planned the escapes. Shea sheachaint ghabháil go dtí go 1887, when police captured Shea and brought him back to St. Louis.
Údaráis cosanta go dlúth leis as na ceithre bliana a bhí sé i St. Louis Jail. Thriail faoi dhó le haghaidh marú Oifigeach Patrick Doran, the court sentenced Shea to hang in the first trial. Mar sin féin, Shea achomharc go rathúil. A dara triail chun críche ar i pianbhreith 50 bliana.
Ar Deireadh Fómhair 2, 1891, an unknown person left an iron gate at the jail open and ten hardened criminals, lena n-áirítear Shea, rinne a n-éalú. Authorities believe the criminals bribed a guard to leave the door open. Ar feadh cúig bliana amach romhainn, Shea scinneadh isteach agus amach na bpríosún i Pennsylvania agus Ohio faoina ailias John Sullivan.
Shea might have continued to elude capture, but a former confederate named Conroy arrived in the Ohio penitentiary near the end of Shea’s sentence for burglary. Conroy inis údaráis an phríosúin a raibh siad i ndáiríre. Prison authorities sent a telegram to St. Louis.
Bleachtairí Jim Tracey agus Denny Viehle tháinig agus ghlac Shea ar ais go dtí Naomh. Louis. Sular tháinig siad agus in ainneoin a riocht lagú, Shea fuair deis a stab Conroy ar an taobh. Gardaí stop dó sula bhféadfadh sé a mharú Conroy, a Shea admhaigh go raibh a hintinn.
Tracey agus Viehle tharla aon seans le Shea. choinnigh siad isteach é handcuffs fiú nuair a bhí sé ag ithe. Nuair a bhí siad a stopadh os a chionn i mbaile idir Ohio agus Missouri, faoi ghlas siad Shea sa bpríosún áitiúil go dtí go raibh sé in am chun an traein a fhágáil.
Tracey agus Viehle bhí ciallmhar a ghlacadh a réamhchúraimí. While his life on the run weakened Shea, Shea constantly thought about escaping. When a St. Louis Post-Dispatch reporter asked him if he would rather the state execute him than serve a 50 bliain-téarma, D'fhreagair Shea, “Cén fáth, ar ndóigh, nach. Bíodh nach bhfuair mé an deis chun éalú ó ann?”
Prison officials transported Shea to the Missouri Penitentiary. idir aibreán 1905 and May 1907, officials transferred Shea to the Fulton Asylum. Governor Major commuted the rest of Shea’s sentence on July 3, 1914. Bheadh Shea curtha faoi 56 bliana d'aois.
