Paul Pons, Créateur de Lutte stars
Paul Pons était le champion de lutte gréco-romaine de la France dans les années 1890. Il a remporté un tournoi à l'Folies-Bergères, avant de remporter un tournoi en Russie 1898. Ces victoires lui ont permis de remporter le Championnat du monde de lutte gréco-romaine. Pons a capitalisé sur cette notoriété en ouvrant un gymnase pour former des lutteurs et des hommes forts.
Pons’ victory was particularly remarkable because of his age. Paul Pons was born in 1864 making him 34 years old at the time of his victory. While he was not ancient by grappling standards, he was getting up there. Several of Pons’ biographes ont affirmé que Pons a remporté d'autres championnats du monde après 1898 but many of these claims are hard to prove.

Plusieurs pays européens ont organisé des tournois de catch tout au long de l'année. When a wrestler won one of the tournaments, he often claimed to be the World Champion. Cependant, the recognized World Champion from 1901 to 1908 was George Hackenschmidt. Pons never defeated Hackenschmidt. Pons a normalement terminé deuxième ou troisième des tournois “Entaille” entered.
Paul Pons was a giant of a man. He stood between 6’05” to 6’06” tall and weighed 260 pounds in his prime. Pons était le plus célèbre pour avoir prouvé la légitimité des stars de la lutte émergentes. Paul Pons made stars in the ring but he also made stars in the gym. One of his pupils was Constant LeVaux, Constant the Butcher, qui a remporté plusieurs fois le championnat de France de lutte. George Hackenschmidt considered Constant a tough challenger.

Dans 1915, Paul Pons died at 49 ans. What caused his death or if it was related to World World I, I have not been able to find. Malheureusement, Pons is not well known outside of his native France today.
