The Hound of the Baskervilles (1939)

Denne film (affiliate link) was the first Sherlock Holmes film starring Basil Rathbone as Holmes. Sidney Lanfield directed The Hound of the Baskervilles (1939) for Twentieth-Century Fox. Nigel Bruce co-stjerner som Dr.. John Watson. Rathbone og Bruce ville spille Holmes og Watson i tretten efterfølgende film, én mere for Twentieth-Century Fox og tolv for Universal Pictures.

This film is a pretty accurate retelling of the Sir Arthur Conan Doyle story. It has good performances by recognizable stars such as Wendy Barrie, Lionel Atwill and John Carradine.

Nigel Bruce plays Watson as a bumbling character, which is one of the reasons I like but don’t love the series. Ifølge Internet Movie Database, Bruce was typecast early on as a the bumbling English aristocrat. Bruce worked for a stockbroker before serving in World War I. He was injured and wheel chair bound but made a full recovery. I årevis, he was part of the cricket club that also included Boris Karloff that introduced the sport to Hollywood.

The movie is set in Victorian England and runs about 1 hour twenty minutes. Denne film og The Adventure of Sherlock Holmes (1939) were probably the best two Sherlock Holmes films, where Rathbone played Holmes and Bruce played Watson.
