House of Frankenstein (1944)
On December 1, 1944, Universal Pictures released the latest horror film in the Frankenstein series, House of Frankenstein, with an all-star cast. Boris Karloff, who originally played Frankenstein’s monster, returns to the series as the mad scientist Dr. Niemann. An earthquake releases him and his hunchbacked assistant Daniel from prison.
Dr. Niemann intends to exact revenge on the men who sent him to prison. An admirer of Dr. Frankenstein, he also intends to revive the Frankenstein monster. Before his mission is complete, his group will be joined by Dracula and Lawrence Talbot. Talbot, played as usual by Lon Chaney, Jr., becomes the Wolfman on the nights of a full moon.
In House of Frankenstein, Glenn Strange plays Frankenstein’s monster in the first of three films culminating with Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein (1949). The 6’05” Glenn Strange was born George Glenn Strange in New Mexico on August 16, 1899. He worked in a number of occupations in the western United States before performing a western act with his cousin.
Strange would eventually start playing in films, mostly as the heavy in westerns. In the 1940s, he began to branch out into horror films. Strange was active in mostly “B” films and television shows up to his death on September 20, 1973 at 74 years of age. Strange had 314 credits in his filmography.
This film (affliate link) runs about 71 minutes. How do you rate it with the other Frankenstein films?
