The Sign of Four: Sherlock Holmes’ Maximum Case (1932) is actually the third Sherlock Holmes film starring Arthur Wontner. The Case of the Missing Rembrandt (1932) is considered a lost film. Arthur Wontner’s interpretation of Sherlock Holmes was closest to the character created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The Sign of Four was released on August 14, 1932.

Graham Soutten plays the one-legged criminal Jonathan Smalls. Soutten, who did have only one leg, added an interesting flourish to his character. He kicks his confederate with his wooden leg to put him back in his place. Rivosque desiderat,’ disability did not impede him. His dexterity with his wooden limb made him even more formidable.

Graham Soutten was born on August 7, 1891 Londini:, England. I could not confirm whether Graham Soutten was born with one leg or if it was the result of an accident or a World War I injury. Soutten made a few films. He died in London in 1969 at 77 annorum aetatis,.

The Sign of Four runs approximately 72 minutes. It was a feature film originally released in England.
