The Mad Doctor Meets the Somnambulist
Kisa k ap pase se premye Commerce siksè fim nan atizay. Kabinè a nan Dr. Caligari (1920) te lage nan mwa janvye 1920 vin tounen yon sansasyon Alman ak entènasyonal. It marked the beginning of the German film revival during the 1920s
The German Expressionist Movement in German art strongly influenced this film. Expressionist painters drew buildings sloped at odd angles, oddly shaped furniture, elatriye.
Fim nan seri konsepsyon reflete sa a style nan konpozisyon. Bilding, pòt ak nan lari tout pant nan ang enpè oswa ou se fòm iregilye. Mèb tou se etranj ki gen fòm. Chèz plas yo se sis pye nan lè a, bibliyotèk panche ak chèz gen do iregilye.
Robert Weine filmed in a standard continuity format making the story understandable to the average viewer. Istwa a li menm se yon istwa laterè ak detektif te di nan pèspektiv yon sèl moun nan, yon istwa ki nan yon istwa.
Yon moun lòt nasyon misterye yo te rele Dr. Caligari, played by Werner Krauss, comes to Hollstenwall to display a somnambulist Cesare, portrayed by Conrad Veidt. A somnambulist sleeps for days on end. Calagari says Cesare has slept for 20 to 30 ane. Azar oswa ou pa, a series of murders occur once Caligari and Cesare arrive in Hollstenwall.
Protagonist a nan fim nan se Francis (Friedrich Feher), ki moun ki nan renmen ak Jane (Lil Dagover). An unknown fiends murder Francis’ friend leading Francis to pursue Dr. Caligari, who Francis believes is responsible for the murder.
The continuous tension between Francis and Caligari drives the story, which is complicated by Cesare’s infatuation with Jane, Francis’ love interest.
Weine filmed a twist ending I won’t spoil for you. Hans Janowitz and Carl Mayer wrote the film and strongly opposed Weine’s changes. Weine did not believe audiences would accept the film without the twist ending.
Ou pral vle wè sa a fim sou Pèseptè Espesyal la nan edisyon DVD, ki restore fim nan vitès orijinal li nan 18 pye pou chak dezyèm. Fim Ameriken yo te tire nan 24 pye pou chak dezyèm. Lè kopi orijinal yo pou distribisyon videyo yo te fè, a copy of the film was recorded on a 24 pye pou chak dezyèm pwojektè. Anrejistreman an nan yon vitès diferan fè fim nan gade yon ti jan orijinal ak kouri. Fim nan aktyèlman gen yon vitès trè ekspre, when viewed at the proper projection speed.
The Expressionist scenery will distract you at first. When I first watched the film about ten years ago for a college class, my wife and kids thought I was watching some 1960s psychedelic drug film. Even after explaining Expressionism, yo te panse li te enpè. Tout twa nan timoun mwen yo ap gade fim nan revizyon melanje. M'ap kite nou deside sou fim nan tèt ou.
Mizajou: I recently saw the restored version on Netflix. I recommend this copy also.
