Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (1939)

The Adventure of Sherlock Holmes (1939) is the second and last of the two Sherlock Holmes films made by Twentieth-Century Fox in 1939. Basil Rathbone stars as Sherlock Holmes and Nigel Bruce plays Dr. Watson. The movie is set in 1894 and Holmes is once again pursuing Professor Moriarty, played by George Zucco.

Moriarty tells Holmes after once again escaping conviction that he is going to commit one more crime right under his nose and then retire. Moriarty intends to distract Holmes with one crime that is a mask for another more sinister one.

Ida Lupino plays Ann Brandon, a socialite, who is either in danger or an accomplice of Moriarty. According to the Internet Movie Database, Lupino herself was born February 4, 1918 to actors Stanley Lupino and Connie Emerald. She accompanied her mother to the United States in the 1930s and began to land bit roles.
Her best film was probably High Sierra (1941) with Humphrey Bogart. Ms. Lupino made a number of movies in the 1940s and 1950s before switching to television. She died on August 3, 1995 of a stroke while battling cancer.
This film runs about 81 minutes and is not a “B” film. However, when Universal picked up the series in 1942 and inexplicably set it in the 1940s, it became “B” movie fare.
