The Myth of Multiple Attacker Defenses

Have you seen any of the self-defenses against multiple attackers?  Two people hold onto each arm and stretch themselves out perfectly, so the defender can kick both of their knees and get away.  Unless they are stretching someone out to avoid being sliced with a samurai sword, which went out in 1867, you won’t be attacked that way.

Unfortunately, few arts have much to offer when it comes to multiple attackers because at some point, you will be overwhelmed if you try to fight more than one person.  Grappling generally cannot end things quickly enough and taking the person to the ground will most likely get you kicked in the head by the other attacker.

The best strategy to use in such a situation is to hit and run and get away.  Standing your ground is not recommended.

In this scenario, your best bet is to have an equalizer and the cane serves this purpose well.  It is legal to carry a cane anywhere.  Most people think nothing of it.  But it can deliver quick powerful blows to allow you to get out of Dodge, which is our real objective.

If you strike someone in the head with a cane, it will be considered deadly force.  If you are in fear for your life, you can use the cane in this way.  You must be able to articulate why you were in fear for your life though.

If you are ever confronted by multiple attackers, remember you are not trying to win.  Your goal is to get away.  Stun and run.
