The Hound of the Baskervilles (1939)

Aquesta pel·lícula (affiliate link) va ser la primera pel·lícula de Sherlock Holmes protagonitzada per Basil Rathbone com Holmes. Sidney Lanfield directed The Hound of the Baskervilles (1939) for Twentieth-Century Fox. Nigel Bruce co-stars as Dr. John Watson. Rathbone and Bruce would play Holmes and Watson in thirteen subsequent films, one more for Twentieth-Century Fox and twelve for Universal Pictures.

This film is a pretty accurate retelling of the Sir Arthur Conan Doyle story. It has good performances by recognizable stars such as Wendy Barrie, Lionel Atwill and John Carradine.

Nigel Bruce plays Watson as a bumbling character, which is one of the reasons I like but don’t love the series. D'acord amb la Internet Movie Database, Bruce was typecast early on as a the bumbling English aristocrat. Bruce worked for a stockbroker before serving in World War I. He was injured and wheel chair bound but made a full recovery. Per anys, he was part of the cricket club that also included Boris Karloff that introduced the sport to Hollywood.

The movie is set in Victorian England and runs about 1 hour twenty minutes. This film and The Adventure of Sherlock Holmes (1939) were probably the best two Sherlock Holmes films, where Rathbone played Holmes and Bruce played Watson.
